Have you recently decided that it’s time to add a kitten to your household? Congratulations! You are in for a lot of fun and some truly adorable moments as you start on this long journey with your new feline buddy. The kitten stage doesn’t last long, but baby felines need lots of care and attention during this crucial phase. Below, your veterinarian Southeast Denver outlines some basic tips for kitten care.

Kitten Proof

Kittens are curious, mischievous, and eager to explore this exciting new world! That taste for adventure can lead your little one straight into danger. Make sure to keep all appliances closed, and keep an eye on little Fluffy to be sure she doesn’t hop into a dryer or fall into a toilet when your back is turned. Eliminate all toxic plants, and be sure to keep your medicines, household cleaners, pesticides, and automotive products safely out of Kitty’s reach. You also want to make sure to secure wires, hanging cords, and any small objects that could present choking hazards.

Playtime

Playing with your new feline friend will help her burn off some extra energy, keep her entertained, and strengthen the bond between you. Use playtime wisely, and train Kitty in the proper use of her claws and teeth from the start.

Naptime

All of that running, jumping, and pouncing will tire your baby furball out. Expect your furry buddy to spend quite a bit of her time asleep. Make her comfortable by providing plenty of warm, comfy places for her to curl up in, and cuddle her in your lap to get that little motor going.

Healthcare

Kittens are very fragile, so you’ll need to keep a close eye on your little one. Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing are a few signs of illness in cats. Contact your vet immediately if you notice any of these signs, or if your kitten is acting unusual in any way. Little Fluffy will also need several shots during her first year. Spaying or neutering is also best done while kitties are young, so talk to your vet about getting this procedure done.

Last but certainly not least … that cute little bundle of fur needs lots of love and cuddles! Don’t forget to take pictures, as your furball will grow up fast!
