Fido’s Top 5 New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year! As we discard our old calendars and hang up new ones, many of us are making resolutions for the coming year. If you have a dog, your canine companion will be right there with you as you set new goals for the coming months. If Fido could make resolutions, what do you think his goals would be? A local Aurora, CO vet offers some great suggestions below.

I Will Not Jump On Guests

Fido can sometimes get a bit too excited when greeting visitors. Jumping on guests is a very common habit in our canine pals, and one that can be quite dangerous. Of course, if you have a Chihuahua, your furry friend probably won’t knock anyone over, but he could easily get stepped on or slip out an open door. Ask your vet or a professional dog behaviorist for tips on breaking this bad habit.

I Will Not Chew Inappropriately

Dogs chew for many different reasons. Fido may be chewing to cope with boredom or anxiety. If he’s a puppy, he may be trying to soothe the pain of teething. Offer your pooch plenty of appropriate chew toys, and be sure to do some puppyproofing.

I Will Come When Called

Does Fido ignore you when you call him, except when he thinks you have a treat? This is bad petiquette, but it can also be a very dangerous habit. Teaching your canine friend to come when called is very important! Here’s a tip: never get angry at or punish your pup for not coming to you. This will only make him more determined to stay away next time!

I Will Stop Begging

Our canine buddies are very skilled little actors. Fido’s soulful stare has certainly won him lots of yummy snacks. However, begging is bad doggy manners, and is a big part of the reason so many dogs are overweight or obese. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations.

I Will Remain Loyal

Fido won’t have trouble meeting this goal. Man’s Best Friend is an amazingly loyal and loving pet! Keep that furry tail wagging by providing your faithful friend with good food, proper veterinary care, and, of course, lots of belly rubs.

As your Aurora, CO animal hospital, we look forward to serving all your pet’s veterinary care needs in 2017 and beyond. Please feel free to contact us anytime.
