7 Great Ways to Help Fido Beat the Heat

The dog days of summer are approaching quickly! While many of us are more than happy to soak up the sun while we can, hot weather—particularly heat waves—can be tough for our furry pals to deal with. Here, an Aurora, CO vet offers some great ways to help your pooch beat the heat.

Frozen Treats

Who doesn’t like an ice cream cone on hot days? You can find doggy ice cream in most pet stores or supermarkets. You can also pamper your pet with homemade pupsicles or other frozen goodies. Just be sure to only use ingredients that are safe for dogs. Ask your vet for more information.

Wading Pool

Many of our four-legged friends love to splash and play in little kiddie pools. Why not pick one up for Fido? You can also pamper your pet by letting him play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler. This can be super cute to watch!

Cool Bed

Did you know that raised beds, such as hammock beds, are cooler than regular beds? That’s because these beds allow air to move beneath them. They also offer great support for bigger dogs. Get your pet a comfy summer bed. On really hot days, aim a fan at Fido’s bed.

Swimming

Swimming can be great fun for Fido! Just be sure to put your canine pal’s safety first. If you’re taking your canine pal to a pool, make sure he knows where the stairs are. Avoid bringing your dog to places where the water is deep, or has strong currents or heavy wakes. Also, never leave your pooch unattended near the water. Ask your vet for more information.

Pet Fountain

Making sure your dog is properly hydrated is very important! Consider picking up a pet fountain for Fido. Also, remember to bring water with you whenever you take him out and about.

Climate Control

When temperatures soar, keep Fido indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or AC, as much as possible. Also, limit your pup’s outdoor time during the day.

Cooling Vest

If your pet really doesn’t do well in the heat, pick up a cooling vest for him. Just be sure to choose the right size!
