November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month. Kitties in their golden years have lots of love and purrs to offer, and can really make great pets. Fluffy will have slightly different care needs than a younger feline, however. Read on as an Aurora, CO vet offers tips on helping your furry buddy settle in.
Food
Proper nutrition is important to all pets, but it’s particularly crucial to seniors. Offer your kitty a good, high-quality food that is specifically formulated for older cats. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard: if Fluffy becomes obese, she’ll be at risk for some very serious health issues.
Furniture
Young cats can really benefit from having pet furniture that encourages them to jump and climb. Older cats, however, really just want to sleep. Fluffy should have a few toys, but she may be more interested in comfy beds and perhaps a good window seat. Set out some pet ramps for your kitty, so she can reach her favorite spots more easily.
Senior Comforts
Older cats often find it much easier to get in and out of litterboxes with low sides. Keep that in mind when you go shopping. If your home has multiple floors, put litterboxes on every level. That way, Fluffy won’t have to use the stairs as much.
Night Light
Just like people, cats sometimes experience a decline in their vision as they age. Set out nightlights for Fluffy, so she can get around after dark more easily.
Veterinary Care
One of the first things you’ll want to do is take your feline pal to the vet for a thorough exam. While you’re there, get some expert advice on Fluffy’s diet and care needs.
Settling In
Major changes are very stressful to cats, so Fluffy may need time to adjust to her new surroundings. When you bring her home, put her in a quiet back room with bedding, toys, food and water, and a litterbox. If you have other pets, keep all of your furry friends separated at first, and make introductions slowly. Spend lots of time with your new kitty, but don’t force attention on her. Remember to be very gentle when you pick her up or put her down. Senior cat purrs are truly special!
