Holiday Care for Senior Pets

The holidays are approaching fast! Your furry friend will be right by your side at this special time of year. If your pet is in their golden years, you may want to take some precautions to keep them happy, healthy, and safe. Here, an Aurora, CO vet discusses senior pet holiday care.

Grooming

Give Fido a bath, or at least a good brushing, before your guests arrive. Don’t forget to clip his claws! Overgrown nails are quite uncomfortable for dogs! They can actually cause your pooch to shift his weight, which is bad for his bones and joints. As for Fluffy, she may have trouble reaching her entire body to groom herself. Help her out by brushing her gently.

Guests

Many older pets are very sweet and affectionate, and will happily cuddle up to guests. However, some dogs and cats are more timid, and can feel uneasy in a packed house. If you’re hosting holiday meals or gatherings, consider putting your furry pal in a quiet back room with food, toys, treats, and bedding.

Warmth

Make sure your furry buddy has a warm, cozy bed to snuggle up in as it gets chilly. Your pet’s bed should not be in a drafty area, or too close to a fireplace or heater. Consider getting your pet a thermal pet blanket or a heated pet bed.

Hazards

Although senior dogs and cats aren’t quite as likely to eat your holiday decorations as younger animals, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Tinsel, ribbon, ornament hooks, ornaments, seasonal plants, candles, wreaths, and garlands are all hazardous. Keep these things out of paws’ reach!

Gifts

Toys are the most popular gift for kittens and puppies. Older pets do still benefit from regular play sessions, but their care should be focused more on comfort. A cozy bed or pet ramps or stairs are excellent gift choices. Fluffy may enjoy a cat tower with the lowest level close to the ground, while Fido may appreciate raised doggy dishes.

Food

Your furry best friend is a part of the family, so it’s only natural to want to include them in the festivities by giving them special treats. Just stick to safe options, like plain, cooked meat, fish, or turkey, without the skin, bones, or fat.
