Adopting a Cat: The First Month

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! Are you considering bringing a new feline friend into your home? If so, please consider going to a shelter to find your new buddy. Of course, no matter where you find Fluffy, you’ll need to give her time to settle in. An Aurora, CO vet offers tips on adopting a new kitty in this article.

Supplies

Fluffy will need some kitty necessities. Food, toys, treats, bedding, grooming supplies, a carrier, a litterbox, litter, and dishes should all be on your shopping list. Your cat will also appreciate some kitty furniture, as well as a good scratching post. Keep your feline pal’s age in mind when you go shopping. Young felines will need lots of toys, and will benefit from furniture that keeps them active. A senior cat, however, will still benefit from toys, but will probably be more appreciative of having lots of soft, comfy beds and napping spots.

Veterinary Care

One of the first things you’ll want to do is take your furball to the vet. Even if your cat is already spayed or neutered, she’ll still need a thorough exam. It’s also important to make sure that she is current on her vaccinations and parasite control. Don’t be afraid to ask for tips on Fluffy’s diet and care needs!

Settling In

If you have other pets, you’ll want to keep them away from your new kitty at first. Put Fluffy’s things in a separate room, and just let her settle in. Introducing your furry friends is something you’ll want to take your time with, as a bad first impression can take months to overcome. Ask your vet for specific advice on making introductions.

Trust

Just like people, cats all have their own purrsonalities. Some kitties are quite bold and friendly, and will immediately jump into your lap and make themselves at home. Others are much more timid, and will need time to adjust and settle in. Spend time with your furry pal, and win her trust by playing with her, talking to her gently, and giving her toys and treats. Be sure to let your cat approach you when she wants to cuddle or be petted. You’ll have Fluffy’s little motor going before you know it!
