Pampering a Senior Cat

As you’ve probably noticed, kitties are very, very good at getting us to spoil them. Fluffy gets to spend most of her time just lounging about and looking cute. However, as your furry little diva ages, you’ll want to pamper her even more. Read on as an Aurora, CO vet offers tips on keeping a senior cat purring.

Beds

Senior cats are even more tired than other kitties. Fluffy may spend up to 20 hours a day snoozing. Make sure your furball has lots of comfy beds and napping spots to choose from. Variety is key here. Your drowsy pet will appreciate having some plush store-bought beds, but she’ll also be quite comfy on soft folded blankets placed on chairs, sofas, or ottomans. Wash and rearrange your cat’s beds regularly, to keep things fun for her. Your feline pal may also appreciate a warm heated bed and/or a thermal blanket in winter.

Grooming

Have you ever noticed that older cats sometimes look a bit unkempt? Fluffy may have trouble reaching her whole body when grooming herself. Give your cute pet a helping hand by brushing her gently. This will remove dead hair and dander from her coat, helping her stay more comfortable.

Supplements

Good nutrition is a crucial part of your kitty’s care regimen. Offer Fluffy a high-quality senior formula food. Certain supplements may be beneficial. Fish oil, for instance, can help lubricate stiff joints. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Kitty-Friendly Facility

Fluffy may have trouble getting in and out of litterboxes with high sides. Get one that will be easier for her to manage. Also, make sure the litterbox is in a private area that’s easy for your cat to reach.

Nightlights

Fluffy may experience some trouble with her vision in her golden years. Nightlights will help her find her way to the litterbox after dark.

Veterinary Care

Your feline friend will need to come in a bit more often as she ages. It’s very important to closely monitor Fluffy’s health as she ages, so that any developing issues can be treated early. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Love

The best thing you can do for your kitty is just make sure that she feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy!
