Do you know or suspect that your pup has hearing issues? Our canine pals can be afflicted by many of the same problems as people can, including hearing impairments. Fido can still live a full and healthy live, even if he can’t hear well. However, you may need to take a few precautions to keep him safe. An Aurora, CO vet discusses caring for a deaf dog below.
Causes
Any dog can develop hearing problems. Some of our canine companions are born with hearing issues. (It’s worth noting that genetic hearing issues are more common in white dogs.) Other pups lose their hearing through injury or infection, or sometimes just with age. If your pet doesn’t seem to be responding to sounds, have your vet examine him right away.
Training
Dogs can learn to respond to hand signals instead of vocal commands. Training may take time, but it will be well worth it. You may also want to teach your pooch to respond when you flicker a light or wave a flashlight. This is a great way to call your furry pal in after dark!
Bells
Consider putting bells on Fido’s collar. This will help you monitor his whereabouts, as he won’t hear you if you call him.
Walking
When walking Fido, walk towards oncoming traffic, and keep him to the outside. He won’t hear cars approaching, so you want to take extra precautions to keep him from veering into the road. Also, keep your furry friend leashed when you take him off your property. This is true for any dog, but it’s particularly important for those that don’t hear well.
Announce Yourself
Fido won’t be able to hear you coming. Many hearing-impaired dogs get very annoyed with being startled from behind. Stomp your foot to get your four-legged buddy’s attention before approaching him.
Signs
If you’re having company or taking Fido out to a public area, a sign around his neck. This will let people know he’s deaf.
Love
At the end of the day, dogs that don’t hear well—or at all—are just like any other pet. They love bacon, toys, and belly rubs, and really just want to hang out with their humans! Pay lots of attention to Fido!
