Keeping Kitty Warm

Colorado isn’t exactly known for having balmy winters. Whether you can’t wait to hit the slopes or prefer to spend winters huddled up in a blanket, reading or watching TV, your feline pal will appreciate a bit of extra TLC as temperatures plummet. An Aurora, CO vet offers some tips on keeping your pet warm and purring below.

Warm Beds

Kitties are very sleepy, and spend as much as 20 hours of their time snoozing, napping, or relaxing. Your furry friend will definitely appreciate having lots of comfy beds. Your pet may enjoy having pet tents or tipis, as they tend to hold warmth. These tend to be quite appealing to cats, as many of them like feeling safe and snug in small spaces. You can also offer Fluffy heated beds or thermal blankets. (Many furballs also enjoy sleeping in warm baskets of laundry, but that’s another topic.)

Keep Kitty In

The best thing you can do for your feline friend this winter is to keep her safe and sound indoors. The Great Outdoors is dangerous for Fluffy no matter what time of year it is. However, it’s especially treacherous in winter, when snow, ice, and freezing temperatures compound year-round hazards like cars and wild animals. Cats can get frostbite—especially on their tails and ears—and can get lost or trapped in heavy snow.

Brushing

Did you know that brushing your furry little diva regularly will also help her stay warm? Removing that dust and dead fur from Fluffy’s coat will help her fur warm her more efficiently. This is also a great way to spend some time with your kitty!

Sunbathing

Cats love to nap and relax in the sun. Try to give your drowsy little pet a comfy spot that gets sun exposure. If you put a blanket on a chair, footstool, or ottoman, and position it in front of a window with a lot of light, there’s a good chance that you’ll find your furball snoozing there quite often.

Cuddles

This may be the cutest option on the list. Winter nights are great for snuggling down with your furry friend. Settle in with a good book or movie and a purring cat on those frigid evenings. Kitties make purrfect cuddle buddies!
