Fitness Check
Before taking Fido hiking, make sure that he’s fit enough. Brachycephalic dogs, for instance, get winded very easily and are not well-suited for vigorous exercise. Senior dogs, puppies, small breeds, and pooches with medical issues may also be better off staying home. If in doubt, check with your vet. Better safe than sorry!
Get Fido’s Gear
Your canine pal may be able to carry some of his own weight. Be sure not to overload your pooch! Fido should never carry more than about 25 percent of his weight. You may want to pick up some things to take with you, such as collapsible doggy dishes and a pet first aid kit.
Precautions
Make sure that your furry friend is microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. Fido should also obey basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Come.

Water

Overexertion
Keep a close eye on your dog, and watch for signs of overexertion. Panting will likely be the first one. Fido may also start lagging behind. If your canine friend is slowing down, give him a break, and let him rest and have some water before you move on.
Areas
Dogs are very curious, and love to explore new places. Keep your four-legged pal on a leash, and don’t let him sniff around areas that could potentially be dangerous.
Pup Check
When you get home, check your furry buddy thoroughly from nose to tail. You’ll want to look for ticks, as well as cuts and scrapes.
