How To Properly Cuddle A Kitten

One of the cutest days of the year is just around the corner. March 23rd is Cuddly Kitten Day! While we don’t think you need an excuse or a special holiday to cuddle a kitten, this is a great time to talk about baby cats. Read on as an Aurora, CO vet discusses the rules to cuddling kittens.

Feeling Kneaded

Don’t be surprised if little Fluffy starts ‘making biscuits’ when she is curled up on your lap. This cute but slightly painful show of affection is actually a huge kitty compliment. Kittens often knead when nursing, as this stimulates milk flow. Therefore, this is a sign that your tiny ball of fur sees you as her parent. (Note: this will probably change when your pet grows up. Adult cats see their humans as servants.)

Purrfect Photos

Your kitten’s charming toddler phase won’t last long. Be sure to capture some of those adorable moments with a camera. If you have a smartphone, you may want to download a pet photo app. Some of these even make noises that capture pets’ attention.

Precautions

Baby felines are very small and fragile, so take precautions. If you have a small child, have them sit or kneel on the floor to hold or play with the kitten. That way, if your young one accidentally drops the cat, little Fluffy won’t fall very far. Also, never drop a kitten onto the floor: put her down gently.

Kitty’s Choice

While many kittens really love being petted and cuddled, they don’t necessarily want attention 24/7. Never chase your baby furball, or force her to stay on your lap or in your arms. When little Fluffy has had enough snuggles, just let her go.

Purr Activation

Cuddling is actually an important part of any kitten care routine. Baby cats are very small and vulnerable, and are happiest when they feel loved and safe. It’s also important to socialize and bond with little Fluffy while she’s young. Pay lots of attention to your furry pal, and let her snuggle up on your lap. Talk to her softly and pet her to get that little motor started. Kitten purrs are one of life’s best gifts!
