February is a pretty important month for our feline patients: it’s National Cat Health Month! Cats have a reputation for being easy keepers. However, just like any other pet, they can get sick or hurt. The problem here is that kitties often try their hardest to hide signs of illness. An Aurora, CO vet lists a few signs of kitty health below.
Friskiness
Kitties are super playful, which is one reason they are such cute and entertaining pets. If Fluffy is in good health, she’ll likely be frisky and mischievous. Even senior cats still like to let their inner kittens out! If your pet loves to play, or sometimes just acts a bit goofy, you may very well have a healthy furball on your hands.
Pretty Kitty
You can actually tell quite a lot about Fluffy’s overall health and well-being just by looking at her. Healthy cats have shiny fur and clear eyes. They also breathe quietly … at least when they aren’t complaining about something.
Weight
Just as with people, cats’ weight is also an indication of their overall condition. Many of our furry friends are obese or overweight. This can be cute, but it can also lead to some serious health issues. You should be able to feel Fluffy’s ribs, but they shouldn’t stick out or be buried under fat.
Nosiness
Our feline friends like to pay close attention to what their humans are doing. Fluffy may very well stick close to you throughout the day, and ‘supervise’ you as you go about your business. She’ll also immediately want to investigate things like boxes and open suitcases.
Relaxation
Alertness, as mentioned above, is one sign of good health in cats. On the other end of the spectrum, relaxation is also a good indication. If Fluffy has no qualms about sprawling out on the floor or draping herself over the back of your chair, it’s a good sign that your furry buddy is feeling pretty good about life.
Good Marks
The best assessment of your cat’s health will need to come from your vet. Fluffy should see her doctor at least once a year! If your feline pal is overdue, let this be an reminder to schedule an exam!
