Fall is just a few days away now. While the worst of the winter weather is (hopefully) still a ways off, it won’t be long before the temperatures start to drop. Although your canine pal may be wearing a fur coat, he isn’t completely immune to the weather. Read on as a local Aurora, CO vet offers some advice on preparing your dog for those cold nights.
Bedding
One of the best things you can do to keep Fido warm and comfortable during winter is to make sure that he has a good doggy bed to curl up in. If your four-legged friend’s bedding is now just a few smooshed pieces of stuffing, it’s probably time for a new one. Make sure your pup’s bed is in a warm spot that isn’t isolated or drafty.
Clothing
If you have a dog with thick fur, like a husky or Malamute, you can skip this one. However, if your furry pal has a thin coat, he’ll need another layer of protection from the cold. Your canine buddy will probably need a light jacket for fall, and something heavier for winter. We generally recommend making sure your pup has at least two of each. That way, if one of his outfits is wet or dirty, he’ll still have something warm and dry to wear. As to Fido’s own fur, make sure it’s clean and soft.
Food
Some pooches need to eat a little more than usual in cold weather, as they burn more calories just staying warm. If your canine companion spends a lot of time outdoors, is a senior, puppy or working dog, or just is naturally thin, he may need larger portions. Dogs that are developing or at risk of bone/joint issues may also benefit from certain supplements. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Doghouses
Hopefully this goes without saying, but pets should live inside, with the rest of the family. However, Fido will still enjoy getting outdoors. If your furry friend has a doghouse, make sure it’s clean, dry, well-insulated, and in good repair. It should also be raised off the ground a little, and positioned to face away from prevailing winds.
