Claws
Did you know that long claws can be very problematic for Man’s Best Friend? Overgrown nails can make it hard for Fido to get good traction on many surfaces. This can lead to slips and falls. They also sometimes get caught and snagged on things. Plus, they’re uncomfortable! Your canine pal may shift his weight or change his stride to compensate, which puts additional strain on his bones and joints. Of course, many people are uneasy about trimming their pets’ nails. You may want to get clippers with a built-in sensor. Grinders are another option. Or course, you can also schedule pawdicures with your furry friend’s vet or groomer.
Paw Pads
Fido’s paw pads are very sensitive. In summer, dogs can quickly get burns and blisters from hot surfaces. In winter, snow, salt, sand and ice can cause painful abrasions. Using paw balm can help protect and moisturize your furry friend’s feet. We also recommend stocking up on pet-safe deicing products before winter.
Dew Claws
Don’t forget about Fido’s dew claws! Sometimes these will become ingrown, which can be quite painful. Ask your vet for more information.
Toe Fur
Many of our canine companions have tufts of fur growing between their toes. These are really cute, but your vet may recommend trimming them. Otherwise, they can get matted and gunky. In winter, they can also collect ice balls. As you can imagine, those aren’t very much fun for Fido!
Desensitization
Does your four-legged pal hate having his feet handled? You may need to work on desensitization. Teach him that he’ll get rewarded with something extra yummy for giving you his paw. Chances are, Fido will suddenly become much more willing!
