Spending National Dog Day With Fido

Dog lovers, put a pawprint on your calendar for August 26th: it’s National Dog Day! This certainly is an appropriately-timed holiday, as it does fall smack dab in the middle of the ‘dog days’ of summer. You certainly don’t need a special occasion to pay some extra attention to your canine pal. However, this special occasion is a great time to get that tail going! Read on as a local Aurora, CO vet offers some things to put on your to-do list.

Study Time

If your furry best buddy hasn’t yet mastered basic obedience commands, like Sit and Stay, take time to work on this. In fact, it’s good to work with Fido every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. If your pooch already knows these basics, show him some cute tricks. Many dogs like learning new things!

Walk

Has it been a while since you took your pup somewhere new for his walks? Bring him to a new park or trail. Dogs get quite a bit of mental stimulation and enrichment from sniffing unfamiliar things. This will be good for you both!

Swimming

This isn’t a good choice for all dogs: some of our canine companions just really aren’t well-suited for swimming. That said, if Fido likes the water, take him to a pet-friendly spot and indulge him. Don’t leave him unattended, though! If your pooch is more of a landlubber, he may enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool

Shopping

Pick up something new for Fido. A fun toy would be a great gift, but you can also get your furry buddy a new bed, or perhaps a comfy harness. Some yummy gourmet treats would also not be unappreciated.

Photo Sessions

We’re guessing that many of you already have dozens of cute photos of your canine buddies. This is a great time to get a few more! Try to snap Fido’s picture against the sunrise or sunset, when the light has a golden feeling.

R&R

You don’t necessarily have to go on any big adventures with your pup. Just spend some quiet time at home with Fido. Treats, playtime, and belly rubs make for a perfect day, as far as dogs are concerned.
